As a retired councillor on Broadstone Poole Dorset Council, a variety of pressing issues have been prevalent in recent months.
Community Issues
One of the main topics that have sparked concern within the community and the council itself is the impact of climate change on the environment and the need for practical and effective measures to mitigate these changes. To this end, our council has been exploring the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimising the city’s efforts towards combating climate change.
International Conflict
Furthermore, we have also been keeping a keen eye on international events such as the situation in Palestine, Gaza and the activities of Hamas, as we have numerous community members whose families are directly or indirectly affected by the conflict in that region. A cop conference was recently held to explore potential measures and strategies we could put in place to support affected community members.
Healthcare
Healthcare remains a primary focus as well. We have partnered with our local hospital to help support humanitarian initiatives, and we have been paying particular attention to the needs of children amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In line with this, our council has also called for a detailed inquiry into the handling of COVID-related matters and plans on pushing for better pandemic preparedness measures moving forward.
Potential Future Issues
As we look ahead towards the Christmas season, it is imperative to remember that while we are battling with international issues and local ones, such as benefits and oil exploration, we cannot forget the ongoing challenges faced by our less privileged community members. To address this, we are looking at restructuring the local benefits system to be more supportive of those in need and calling for a stop to harmful practices like nuclear power and excessive oil consumption.
